Marble is created when the sedimentary stone (limestone or travertine) is exposed to heat and pressure over a long period of time. The stone undergoes a metamorphosis, it recrystallizes and becomes denser and harder. The recrystallization allows the marble to take a nice and beautiful polish finish during fabrication.
This means the tile is ground flat by a mechanical process and left with a matt/satin finish - if it were paint it would be described as eggshell.
Basically it is honed first then it is machined for a longer period of time using finer abrasives until the surface is highly shiney and reflective. - if it were a paint it would be described as high gloss.
