Slate is formed from very fine grained shale and clay deposits which settle in to layers under extreme temperature and pressure fluctuations. This creates the characteristic partings and grain distinctive of slate, this is known as its natural cleft and is ideal for use outdoors where a positive anti-slip finish is required. Slate comes in honed, tumbled or riven finishes.
Slate stone has traditionally been used for centuries as roofing and flooring, the durability of this material ensured its popularity until the introduction of cheaper man made alternatives
Much of the slate used in the UK today comes from China however there are still Slate mines in Cornwall, Wales and Cumbria.
Installing Slate if done professionally can be time consuming. Slate although it may come in a single format i.e. 12" x 12" the thickness differ greatly. These different thickness have to sorted before any fixing can commence. Again the time an effort taken at the setting out stage wil reflect in towards the 'wow' factor when fininshed.
